Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most frequent nutritional disorder and can be found in 2–28% of the population in developing countries. It is one of the most frequent causes for consultation in clinical practice. In Spain, its prevalence is greater in women under 50 years of age (14.8%) and in those under 3 years of age (4.3–5.7%). In the evaluation of a patient with iron deficiency, the most important aspect is to identify and treat the underlying cause. Treatment options include oral compounds, which are a safe, economical, and effective option. Intravenous formulas are indicated for treatment of IDA when oral preparations are not adequate or when rapid supplementation is clinically necessary.
