Abstract

The medical record allows us to make a precise diagnosis and evaluate the severity of an episode of hemoptysis. A simultaneous evaluation and approach are essential for treatment success. The main objective is to ensure adequate ventilation, oxygenation, and intravenous access. A multidisciplinary team will be activated to stabilize and control bleeding in life-threatening hemoptysis and admission to the intensive care unit. Intubation must not be delayed if a large-bore tube is not available. A chest x-ray should be the first imaging test performed. A multidetector computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest must be performed in stable patients. A flexible bronchoscopy is the diagnostic and treatment procedure of choice in unstable patients. A rigid bronchoscopy is only used when greater blood suction capacity and visualization of the airway is needed. Emergency surgery is reserved for failed bronchoscopy and embolization interventions.
