Abstract

Abdominal distension is defined as subjective experience of excessive bowel gas or bloating, whether or not accompanied by an objective increase in the abdominal girth. Is the most common symptom in patients bothering functional digestive disorders. Validated consensus guidelines for diagnosis of abdominal distension are not available. In order to find the etiology as well as to identify alarm signs and symptoms, thorough anamnesis has to be performed. Then, according with clinical suspicion complementary tests will be done. A good differential diagnosis would lead to discard more severe diseases. Treatment has to be focused in reducing those factors assisting abdominal distension. The most important goal is to rule out underlaying organic cause on which to act in a directed way. Hygienic-dietary recommendations, lifestyle changes and drug treatment are offered.
