Abstract

Acute diarrhea is one of the most common reasons for medical consultation and causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Its differential diagnosis is broad and most cases are of infectious etiology. Fever is a very important symptom, since it may indicate infection by an enteroinvasive agent, although it may also be present in other non-infectious etiologies. In most cases, episodes of diarrhea are mild and self-limited and thus, additional tests may be foregone. Treatment is mainly symptomatic. However, it is important to take a proper case history and perform a physical examination in order to identify patients with severe symptoms or associated risk factors. In these patients, performing tests and, most likely, administering targeted treatments would be indicated.
