Abstract

Malignant central airway obstruction (MCAO) is defined as obstruction of the trachea, main carina, and main bronchi. The condition has a high morbidity and mortality. Its most common cause is primary neoplasms. The aims to consider in this disease are conducting a complete diagnostic and staging study, increasing quality of life, lengthening survival, and improving the patient's clinical conditions in order to receive treatment. For this, we must perform an exhaustive multidisciplinary clinical evaluation; assess operability and resectability; and consider early treatment that may include surgery, bronchoscopic resection, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy.
