Abstract

ConceptAbdominal bloating is a very common gastrointestinal symptom in the general population, worsening the quality of life of sufferers greatly. Also it is part of the clinical spectrum of the most prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorders and some organic diseases too. AetiopathogenesisIn its pathophysiology multiple mechanisms have been implicated, most notably the fiber and sugar intake, malabsorption problems, defects in motility and the adaptive response to intestinal gas, visceral hypersensitivity phenomena, altered microbiota and bacterial overgrowth. None of them separately is able to justify the development of symptoms in all cases. DiagnosisThe diagnosis is mainly based on the medical history and physical examination, although in some cases where alarm data are associated may be needed additional tests selected according to clinical suspicion, in order to exclude an underlying organic illness.
