Abstract

The complaint of insufficient or nonrestorative sleep is highly prevalent among the general population and leads to frequent medical consultations in search of a treatment. Any physician must have basic knowledge in order to know the normal data for the population, know when a disease is present, and be able to differentiate primary insomnia from insomnia caused by other primary sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or other circadian rhythm disorders which have a different treatment approach. This protocol attempts to facilitate this task and clarify any questions about the terminology or definitions of «symptoms of insomnia» and «insomnia disorder» offering enough information to differentiate primary insomnia from other insomnias and thus, for recommending the most effective treatments.
