Abstract

Because of the impact generated by on quality of life and economic costs, efforts by primary care physicians, internists and gastroenterologists should be directed at identifying patients who may benefit from specialized diagnostic tests, to exclude causes that may threaten life and develop therapies that are effective in the long term. After the essential anamnesis, usually comes to an empirical therapeutic trial because most are functional chronic constipation. In severe cases, or lack of response in this review we suggest a sequence of more or less complex tests to allow identification of the causes that give rise to proper management.
