Abstract

Acute abdominal pain (AAP) is a common reason for consultation in emergency departments and, in up to one quarter of patients, it is located in the epigastrium. AAD encompasses a wide variety of both intra-abdominal and extra-abdominal clinical syndromes which vary in severity. For this reason, a correct early assessment of vital risk and a proper diagnostic approach based on a case history, physical examination, and additional tests are essential. This protocol includes the most important clinical and physical examination features that will allow for making a correct differential diagnosis of acute epigastric pain.
