Abstract

Abdominal pain in the epigastrium is one of the most frequent causes of medical consultation. A medical history and physical examination will guide the diagnostic steps according to the suspected disease. The most frequent causes are functional dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or chronic pancreatitis. The most commonly used diagnostic methods are abdominal ultrasound and gastroscopy. In this protocol, a diagnostic algorithm is developed to guide additional tests based on clinical suspicion.
