Abstract

Abdominal masses are space-occupying lesions, expressed as an increase in volume, located in the abdominal cavity. Presentation can be either a palpable lesion or a casual find in an imaging test. Differential diagnosis is wide and includes a multiple variety of clinical entities classified, from a practical point of view, in four groups: intraperitoneal masses, retroperitoneal masses, pelvic masses and abdominal wall masses. To achieve diagnosis and management computer tomography and, in lesser extent, magnetic resonance are the basic techniques. In most patients a specimen for histological study has to be taken; in these cases, procedure will be performed either through percutaneous puncture, guided by ultrasound or CT, either through biopsy by laparotomic or laparoscopic approach.
