Abstract

Rectitis (inflammation of the rectum) can be caused by numerous conditions. Some of the most common causes of rectitis include inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), sexually transmitted infections (such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia), radiation therapy in the pelvic area, rectal trauma, rectal prolapse, or, more uncommonly, ischemic rectitis. The diagnosis of rectitis should include a physical examination, laboratory tests such as blood and stool tests, as well as imaging tests such as colonoscopy or rectosigmoidoscopy, as these allow for the rectal mucosa to be observed and samples to be obtained for histological and microbiological analysis. The treatment of rectitis usually depends on the underlying cause. This may include anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, antivirals, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes. The following protocol describes the above aspects in detail.
