Abstract

Acute renal failure (ARF) consists in a deterioration of the renal function produced suddenly (hoursdays-weeks). It consists in a decrease of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The decrease in GFR leads to failure of nitrogenous waste products excretion with the consequent elevation of urea and creatinine and impossibility to maintain hydroelectrolytic balance. According to the etiology of ARF, its is considered prerenal, parenchymatous or obstructive origin. Management of ARF, independently of whether the patient is a cancer patient or not, includes treating the cause that has lead to the failure and medical treatment to avoid the worsening of the renal function while the cause is being resolved. On the other hand, there are more typical pictures of the oncology patient. These are tumor lysis syndrome and hepatorenal syndrome. These are also reviewed in this protocol.
