Abstract

Fever of recent onset (less than seven days) commonly has an infectious cause. The initial evaluation of a patient with fever includes an examination of alarm signs and hemodynamic instability. In a stable patient, the diagnostic evaluation will be done based on the patient's clinical conditions and current symptoms and will be oriented toward establishing the etiology in order to begin the most appropriate treatment. There are diagnostic peculiarities in the management of elderly and pluripathological patients. Fever in patients who are hospitalized or in contact with healthcare services is frequent and potentially severe. These patients are more susceptible to infection and at risk of infection by multiresistant microorganisms.
