Abstract

Acute renal failure induces a uremic environment that causes a hypercatabolic state, inflammation and malnutrition. Protein and energetic stores leak out. Simultaneously the adaptation mechanism to stress conditions or higher energy demand are impaired. Prognosis and evolution of patient with acute renal failure depend on his nutritional status. It is important to know the patient's dietary needs in each stage of the disease in order to prevent the state of malnutrition. The management of acute renal failure determine the prognosis, so when it appears, a correct assessment and treatment is required. In a practical way in the current paper we distinguish among patients with acute renal failure, chronic kidney insufficiency and in renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis); besides, nutritional treatment in each case will be described.
