Abstract

Essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder in adults and on occasion, it can be highly debilitating. First-line treatment is pharmacological (mainly propranolol and primidone) and tends to be effective in most patients. With time, up to 50% of patients are either not going to tolerate the medication or are going to be refractory to said therapies. In the case of intolerance and/or debilitating and drugresistant tremor, botulinum toxin injections or neurosurgical procedures such as deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus or ablative procedures such as radiofrequency thalamotomy, Gamma Knife® or magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) radiosurgery may be indicated. This protocol summarizes therapeutic recommendations based on scientific evidence for the management of patients with ET.
