Abstract
The first generation of total ankle prosthesis failed for not congruent designs and loosening. In the following years many approaches were tried, with 2-components designs unconstrained or semiconstrained and not congruent to minimize the polyethylene wear, and 3-component prostheses unconstrained and with a fully congruent polyethylene meniscal bearing. The results of this second generation of ankle prostheses were very encouraging.
