Abstract
Natural aging, infection, excessive sound stimulus (noise and knock sound), radioactive and ototoxic drug can damage inner ear and cause different degrees of sensorineural hearing loss, the mechanism is not clear. It may be related to the excessive production of oxygen free radicals leading to apoptosis of cochlear hair cells. Melatonin (MLT) as the most potent antioxidants, plays a very important role in protecting the inner ear damage. In this review, we provide an overview of MLT synthesis, distribution and metabolism, the protective effect amd mechanism of MLT on inner ear damage, MLT efficacy and dose correlation and MLT safety etc. The authors hope to provide more reference for the treatment of inner ear damage. Key words: Melatonin; injury of inner ear; Free Radical; Hair Cells
