Abstract

The rapid digitisation of government and corporate telecommunication infrastructures in the Asia-Pacific region has resulted in an increased appreciation of the sociological impact of technology on the privacy of name-linked data concerning individuals in many different countries throughout the area. These concerns may ultimately affect the region's competitiveness in a world which is becoming divided into formidable trading blocs. If the Asia-Pacific region is seen by Europe and North America as insensitive to data privacy concerns, it could result in the hindrance of data flows to certain countries in the region or to the region as a whole.
