Abstract

Humanity's shared cultural heritage is a fragile commodity threatened by war, looting and natural disasters. In an effort to protect these resources for future generations, an international community of scholars, statesmen, librarians and archivists work to frame laws, standards and conventions to govern the stewardship of cultural artifacts. This community is also engaged in various documentation projects to catalogue world treasures as a record for future generations. An overview of international laws relating to world cultural resources is presented followed by examples of documentation projects focusing on Iraq, Afghanistan and Croatia. The article concludes with a discussion of future directions and issues related to documentation and protection of cultural properties.
