Abstract
Acute abdominal diseases (acute abdomen) treated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) methods, though not infrequently documented in TCM works for a great many generations, were not summarized as theories and formalized therapeutic methods. Since the late 1950's, along with the development of scientific work of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine (ITCWM), academic as well as clinical research of acute abdominal diseases by ITCWM has been carried out by a number of well-trained general surgeons after systematic TCM education and training. Marked progress has been achieved with practices and exploration in the past 30 years.
