Abstract

The search for evidence of life beyond Earth is one of the most exciting and potentially transformative scientific quests of our time. The possibility of life on another planetary body hinges on two factors: the likelihood that life could arise from prebiotic chemical reactions and the capacity of the planetary environment to sustain biological activity thereafter. The likelihood of an origin of life event on another planetary body cannot be accurately predicted, because we do not know exactly how and where life on Earth originated. But the capacity of an environment to sustain biological activity can be constraint based on our understanding of the environmental limits of terrestrial life. In this article, we review the prospects of life beyond Earth based on our current understanding of other planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond.
