Abstract

This chapter explores contemporary attitudes towards language use by grounding Chap. 3’s investigation of prose structure within its socio-historical context. Specifically, it investigates whether the contextual aspects of letter recipient and primary communicative function affect the extent to which the prose contained within individual letters reflects the structure and cohesion of Present Day English speech. The chapter engages with previous studies and draws conclusions about attitudes towards language use in Early Modern England as well as the process of standardization in English.
