Abstract

Eurocode 2 does not provide explicit guidance for the shear design of elements with circular cross-section - the terms in the provisions are intended for elements with concentrated tensile reinforcement, such as beams subjected to bending. The most common elements with circular cross-section are columns and piles, which typically have uniformly distributed reinforcement around the circumference and significant axial force. It is necessary to adjust the relevant inputs in order to formulate procedures of reasonable complexity, which are suitable for practical application. The paper presents the application of the Eurocode's 2 model for shear design on circular cross-section elements. Simple instructions are given for practical calculations that are on the safe side, covering all aspects of shear design: shear resistance of concrete, shear resistance of reinforcement, maximum shear resistance and calculation of additional tensile reinforcement. The procedures are illustrated with a numerical example in accordance with the national document SRPS EN 1992-1-1/NA.
