Abstract

Jordan is considered to be one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, where the water shortage problem has become of a permanent nature. All efforts are focused on managing water usage, saving existing water, and creating new water resources. In this paper, a water management and control device (WMCD) is proposed to solve the problem of floating storage tanks in areas which are not suited for the indirect water supply systems. The WMCD aims to manage the existing water in the storage tanks and automatically control the storage tanks filling operation with minimum energy and no water losses. The water management and control device consists of valves, sensors, and controllers; it uses a programmable logic control (PLC) to control the overall filling operation and to monitor the water level in the storage tanks. It satisfies its purpose by giving consumers the chance to manage their available water resources as they observe the level of water in their storage tanks continuously, and it controls the filling operation by means of water and pressure sensors, thus saving water and energy.
