Abstract

This chapter discusses properties of the trigonometric functions. It discusses the measurement of angle, the trigonometric ratios for an acute angle, the trigonometric ratios for any angle, and the graphs of the trigonometric functions. For an acute angle θ , the trigonometric ratios are defined as follows: and . These definitions of the trigonometric ratios can only apply to acute angles, because they involve the ratio of the sides of a right-angled triangle containing the given angle. The chapter presents a tabulation of the trigonometric functions for angles in the range 0° to 90°. The graphs of these ratios may be plotted very accurately for acute angles. The chapter further presents formulae for the trigonometric ratios of the sum and difference of two angles in terms of the trigonometric ratios of those angles.
