Abstract

Silica glass has high optical transmission in a wide wavelength range, high heat resistivity and high radiation resistivity. Most of these properties are related to the “hardness” of the silica glass network which is controlled by terminal structures such as SiOH and SiCl. The properties of fused quartz produced by melting natural quartz powder are not only controlled by these terminal structures but are also affected by the “grain structure” which reflects the trace of the adhesion of the particles of natural quartz powder.
