Abstract

The properties of several cement-bonded castables and a phosphate-bonded ramming mix were determined before and after exposure to saturated vapor or immersed in liquid in pure steam, CO-steam, and a gas mixture containing H2O, CO, CO2, CH4, H2, and H2S, at pressures and temperatures anticipated at the cold face of the refractory lining in coal gasifiers. Chemical reactions occurring in the refractories were determined by XRD, DTAITGA and correlated with properties. No major difference in properties was found between castables immersed in liquid and those exposed to saturated vapor. However, the loss of CaO which occurred both in liquid and saturated vapor, seemed to be more in liquid than vapor and should be considered in long term service performance.
