Abstract
The chemical resistance of the bond phases in several cementbonded castables and a phosphatebonded ramming mix to CO-steam mixtures of CO/H2O = 0.1, 1 and 3 at 6.9 MPa and 204, 241, 278, and 538 °C was evaluated from physical property changes, X-ray diffraction and DTA/TGA. The properties, generally, showed no major dependence upon the CO/H2O ratio. However, there were evidences of CO disintegration, favored by a high CO content, especially in refractories containing >1 pct iron. The presence of SiO2 in the castables, as a component of the refractory cement or aggregate, was found to be beneficial to their flexural strength after exposure to CO-steam mixtures.
