Abstract
The magnetic and structural properties of melt-spun NdFeB alloy depend in a sensitive way on the quench rate. These ribbon properties affect the process used in the fabrication of hot-pressed isotropic magnets and die-upset, aligned magnets. We present the results of an investigation into the nature of these process interactions. Melt-spun ribbon is produced for a series of substrate velocities to vary the quench rate. We discuss the magnetic properties of the resulting ribbon, hot-pressed MQ-II magnets and die-upset MQ-III magnets. The unique magnetic properties of melt-spun NdFeB material are due to the uniaxial anisotropy in the Nd2Fe14B1 phase and the process and composition-dependent microstructure consisting of very fine grains of the hard magnetic phase surrounded by NdFe eutectic. Microscopic study of ribbon and magnet samples reveals the nature of this structure and how it relates to the magnetic properties and processing parameters.
