Abstract

Abstract Piezoelectric composite materials have found wide applications in various transducer devices as they can easily be tailored to the specific needs of a device engineer. Recently developed fired 0–3 composites show encouraging properties as transducers for biomedical imaging applications. Fired ‘0–3’ composites are prepared by pressing pellets of different piezoelectric powders, heat treating them at different temperatures and back filling them with different organic polymers. The different types of piezoelectric material studied are Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT), Lead Magnesium Niobate (PMN), Lead Zirconium Niobate-Lead Titanate-Barium Titanate (PZN-PT-BT) and Lead Titanate doped with samarium and manganese (PTSM). These pellets are fired at different temperatures to get the requisite porosity for getting low density.
