Abstract
Abstract In this chapter, we discuss the elementary theory of projective representations of finite groups. The foundations of the theory were presented by Schur in two papers in 1904 and 1907. A subsequent paper, Schur (191 I), applies this theory to the symmetric and alternating groups, and is the basis for much of the material in this book. We begin with some general definitions.
