Abstract

Charge state distributions of incoming U 40+ ions at 7.5 and 6.7 Mev/ A after scateering to 5° from very thin (1–40 μg/cm 2) Sn targets on 6 μg/cm 2 C backing, as well as their coincidence with U L X-rays and Sn K X-rays have been measured. Even with the thinnest targets the charge distribution at 5° looks similar to equilibrium distributions, with average values of 60+ to 62+. This is in agreement with measurements of lighter ions at lower energies where an equilibrium-like distribution is obtained in a single collision. The average charge increases slightly with target thickness, due to the fact that the single collision mean value is a little lower than the 0° equilibrium one in solid target.
