Abstract

This chapter focuses on a low-fuel-level indicator. This device is activated by the car's fuel level gauge, and operates a small warning light when the fuel level falls below a pre-set value. Alternatively, the unit can be made to operate the panel light if the engine water temperature exceeds a pre-set value, provided that the vehicle is fitted with an electrically operated water temperature gauge. The device is a voltage-operated electronic switch which turns on whenever the input voltage falls below a pre-set value. The chapter shows in a diagrammatic form the negative ground version of the unit. The circuit is made up of a voltage- sensing differential amplifier (Q1 and Q2), and a regenerative switch (Q2 and Q3). Q1 and Q2 are wired as emitter followers, but share a common emitter resistor, R2. Due to the emitter follower actions of Q1 and Q2, the voltage at the top of R2 takes up a value close to that of the larger of the two base voltages.
