Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by long term interaction between periodontal pathogens and host immune system.Rhumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease with pathogenesis not fully elucidated.These two diseases share many immunopathological features.In the case of increased secretion of proinflammatory mediators,both diseases are characterized by chronic bone tissue destruction.In recent years,studies have shown that a complicated interrelationship may exist between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a T-cell-derived cytokine that may play an important role in the initiation and maintenance of the pro-inflammatory response,and can stimulate osteoclastic resorption.
