Abstract
As a novel approach to monitor the molecular epidemiology of viruses, environmental surveillance has been successfully performed in polio eradication. Due to the lack of case-based surveillance, environmental surveillance is expected to be an important monitoring method for viral gastroenteritis in China. To date, there is limited information on environmental surveillance for gastroenteritis viruses in China. However, it has been conducted well in foreign countries. Here, we reviewed studies on environmental surveillance for gastroenteritis viruses in order to provide the guidance for its development in China.
