Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes. It is one of the major blinding diseases in the world. The intercellular communication function of connexins plays a key role in maintaining retinal microvascular homeostasis. The connexins involve in the development of diabetic retinopathy. This article reviews the role of connexins in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Key words: Connexin; Gap junction intercellular communication; Diabetic retinopathy
