Abstract

Optical communication has made a startling progress in a short period of just two decades. Tele-communication system engineers now have a much desired ultra-wide-band, low-loss, and practically noise-free transmission medium in the form of glass fibres. Progress made in the technology of long wavelength active and passive lightwave devices and single-mode optical fibres is reviewed here. Applications of both, the optical line-of-sight as well as fibre communication technology are described. Design considerations for optical communication systems are discussed.
