Abstract
To reduce manufacturing costs and to improve electrical efficiency of solar cells are top priorities of the whole photovoltaic (PV) industry. The success of laser processing techniques in the integrated circuits industry indicates that such techniques could also be adapted in the PV industry. In this paper, we presented recent progress in advanced laser processing for manufacturing of high efficiency silicon solar cells at RX Technologies, especially the application of picosecond laser pulses for ablation and doping on crystalline silicon solar cells. A system based on this technique has been employed in production line by one of the leading manufacturers of solar cells. Efficiencies of 19.2% and 17.5% for monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon have been achieved under the condition of volume production. This result shows a great improvement, compared with results obtained from traditional manufacturing techniques.
