Abstract
Progress in synthesis procedures and fabrication techniques leads to the generation of new class of materials, i.e. advanced ceramics. Advanced ceramics can be elaborated as processed ceramic materials having unique and functional properties. Due to their tunable functional properties, advanced ceramics materials are useful in various applications covering energy conversion systems, waste water treatment, sensor systems, biomedical applications, electrical systems, electronic applications, aerospace applications, thermal conductors, cutting tools, atomic energy applications, auto-motive applications, packaging and environmental applications. This chapter focuses on the classification of advanced ceramic materials and their synthesis routes. It covers different properties such as physical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, optical and electrical properties for applications in various fields. Depending upon properties of advanced ceramics, energy and environmental applications are discussed.
