The state of the theoretical understanding of the pion nucleus interaction is discussed. Quantitative understanding of one-nucleon processes has been achieved. Basic questions concerning the two-nucleon processes of double charge exchange, pion absorption and the phenomenon of low-energy repulsion remain open.
