Abstract

The Centre for Underground Construction (COB), was established by the Dutch government in 1994 as a research institution. As the programme got underway, new projects were introduced and the emphasis shifted from purely technology-related issues to more general topics associated with the use of underground space. COB's objective for the coming years is not to concentrate solely on tunnelling in soft soils, but rather to expand the experience gained and to further promote underground construction on a larger scale.
