Abstract
Margaret Lial, of Sacramento State College, has had impressive teaching experience. She and co-author, Charles D. Miller, have two mathematics textbooks in press: Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra, both intended for college students. Students in a typical elementary algebra class at a two-year college tend to vary widely in many factors such as age, mathematical background, ability, motivation, and emotional and educational maturity. Because of the diversity of students who need to master the material in this course in order to fulfill their educational goals, the traditional lecture approach is often inadequate. While some students handle the material with ease, others require much more drill and individual tutoring.
