Abstract

In a recent article, l" Professor Ziff introduces a new method with which he allegedly demonstrates that the plain man's conception of the Judaic-Christian god is intelligible. Ziff shows that 'God' is a proper name and then points out that by associating conditions with this name and inquiring into whether or not anything satisfies these conditions, we can ascertain whether or not God exists. Among the conditions associated with the name 'God' as used by the plain man are some that Ziff calls "problematic"~ i.e., such that their intelligibility would be questioned by persons who deny that the name with which they are associated has a referent. Examples of problematic conditions are being an omnipotent being 9 being cause of itself~ being creator of the world, etco Ziff tries to show that these conditions are intelligible. I shall try to demonstrate that he is mist~ken and that, therefore, he has not resurrected the plain man's conception of God.
