Abstract

Background: Nurse educators who understanding what phenomena of professional socialization are among nursing students will be helpful to enhance professional role development of these students. However, no literature was found describing professional socialization process from the perspectives of five-year junior college nursing students.Purpose: To investigate what experiences nursing students perceived during their learning process and explore the phenomena of professional socialization among them in a five-year junior college.Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structure questionnaire to collect data. Fifteen participants of the fifth grade nursing students were recruited from a five-year junior college of technology in Taiwan. The comparisons synchronized strategy is used to analyze data.Results: The professional growth of the fifth-grade junior nursing students was including three themes: (1) defining nursing: from general to caring perspective, (2) identifying the role of nurses: from stereotype to professional perspectives, (3) developing nursing career: from motivation to tentative plan.Conclusions/Implications for practice: This study showed that the participants were able to establish professional identities to nursing during the period of nursing education, whereas part of them would not immediately work as a nurse or make commitment to nursing because they were not sure whether they fitted in nursing. The joint efforts of school educators and clinical practitioners to cultivate a nurse are recommended.
