Abstract
Counsellor professionalism is closely related to the ethics that a counsellor must hold and adhere to before, during, and after conducting a counselling session. This professionalism is a reflection of the counsellor's profession and the helpful service provided by the counsellor to the community. In Malaysia, the body responsible for maintaining the professionalism of counsellors is the Malaysian Council of Counsellors (LKM). As a government body that looks after the counselling profession in Malaysia, one of the major responsibilities played by LKM is to regulate counselling services in Malaysia in addition to providing a Counsellor Code of Ethics for counsellors to conduct counselling sessions. Therefore, in this article, the writer will discuss several matters involving the function and role of the Malaysian Counsellor Board, the characteristics of a professional counsellor, the counsellor's competence, and the importance of the counsellor's code of ethics for counselling services.
