Abstract

Production of acetic acid from ethanol by electrolysis (electrosynthesis) in alkaline medium has been carried out using Ni, Cu and Pt electrodes. The electrochemical behaviour study by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at Ni, Cu and Pt electrodes in electrolyte alkaline also had been done. In this work we investigate the effects of electrod, electrolysis time and electrolyte concentration on the yields of acetic acid and other product. Electrooxidation of 0.25 M ethanol in KOH (24 mL) done with Chronocoulometry (CC) at potential 1.050 V. From CC data shows that the oxidation potential of ethanol in KOH at 600 mV. From HPLC data, Cu electrod at concentration of KOH low (0.1 M) more effective to yield acetic acid compared to Ni electrod, Ni electrod betters to yield acetic acid at concentration of KOH 1.0 M. Product electrooxidation of ethanol besides acetic acid is acetaldehyde and athyl acetate. keyword : Ethanol, Acetic Acid, Electrolysis
