Abstract

AbstractHydrometallurgy is concerned with the production of metals and some compounds of metals, by means of reactions in water or in organic solvents. Two main kinds of hydrometallurgical process must be distinguished; the first is designed for the production of metals on a large scale, using as feed material an ore, scrap metal, or a residue from some other process, while the purpose of the second is the precipitation of metals in special forms, such as a coating on some other solid. In the latter case the value of the product is high in relation to the weight of metal deposited, so that it may be convenient to use pure metal salts as starting materials, and the cost of the reducing agent may not be important.
