Abstract

If strongly interacting vector mesons (V) of mass greater than twice the mass ( m L ∼ 1.8 GeV) of heavy leptons exist, as recent experiments seem to indicate and as may be expected in many gauge models of weak interactions containing more than 4 quarks, then heavy leptons will be produced as their decay products. The cross sections for heavy lepton production from such a mechanism in many high-energy processes could be larger than regular production of heavy leptons via virtual photons. A calculation of the decay V → L + + L − → μ +- + e -+ + v's along with the numerical results for the μ, e spectra for m V = 3.7 and 4.7 GeV are presented and we show that 〈M μ e 〉 ∼ 0.30 √ m V 2 − 2m L 2 and 〈E l〉 = 7 40 〈E V 〉 . For the specific experiment of Knapp et al. which is currently in search for μe events in γN collisions a parametrized form for the incident photon spectrum at FNAL, and the experimental acceptance criteria are incorporated and the resulting μe spectra for m V = 3.7 and m V = 4.7 GeV are given.
