Abstract
ABSTRACT A heterogeneous catalyst alumina-doped calcium oxide nanocomposite was synthesized and used for the transesterification of pork fat into biodiesel. Calcium oxide was synthesized from waste egg shells which were then doped with alumina. The characterization of nanocomposite was done using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Optimization of biodiesel production was done by varying the molar ratio of methanol:oil ratio, catalyst concentration, temperature, and reaction time. Maximum biodiesel yield of 92.5% was achieved at the catalyst loading of 8% (w/w), methanol to oil ratio of 9:1, reaction temperature of 65ºC, and reaction time of 90 min. The biodiesel was characterized by gas chromatography.
